Realized Lifetime Parasitism of Glassy-winged Sharpshooter Egg Masses by Gonatocerus Ashmeadi

چکیده
1. Objectives The main objective was to measure real lifetime contributions of individual female Gonatocerus ashmeadi to parasitism of glassy-winged sharpshooter (GWSS) egg masses in citrus orchards. However it is unknown whether G. ashmeadi is proor syn-ovigenic. Gonatocerus parasitoids are generally classified as strictly pro-ovigenic (Jervis and Copland, 1996). Jervis et al. (2001) calculated ovigeny index (number of mature eggs at emergence divided by potential lifetime fecundity) of 638 species of parasitoids from 28 families and concluded that ovigeny exists on a continuum from strictly pro-ovigenic species (ovigeny index = 1) to extremely synovigenic species (ovigeny index = 0). In order to investigate realized lifetime fecundity of individual G. ashmeadi in the field it is essential to determine whether this parasitoid is proor synovigenic and whether egg maturation or oosorption exist.

Parasitoid longevity, utilization of Homalodisca coagulata (Say) (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae) eggs of diVerent ages, and progeny survival rates were determined in the laboratory for Gonatocerus ashmeadi Girault, Gonatocerus triguttatus Girault, and Gonatocerus fasciatus Girault (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae). Ovipositional behavior and aggression between females were investigated when all three species ...

Egg maturation and oosorption in Gonatocerus ashmeadi were investigated in the laboratory and the relationship between hind tibia length (HTL) and <12 h egg load, and wing wear and parasitoid age were determined. G. ashmeadi given access to honey-water and hosts, on average, matured 77 eggs in excess of those they were born with. The number of mature eggs in female G. ashmeadi provided honey-wa...

The reproductive and developmental biology of Gonatocerus ashmeadi Girault, a parasitoid of the glassy-winged sharpshooter Homalodisca coagulata (Say), was determined at five constant temperatures in the laboratory: 15; 20; 25; 30; 33 C. At 30 C, G. ashmeadimaintained the highest successful parasitism rates with 46.1% of parasitoid larvae surviving to adulthood. Lifetime fecundity was greatest ...

Interspecific competition between G. ashmeadi, G. triguttatus and G. fasciatus for GWSS egg masses was investigated in the laboratory using three experimental designs. Overall parasitism by G. ashmeadi was consistently higher (up to 76.0%) compared with G. triguttatus and G. fasciatus, for all three experimental designs. Exposing females to individual egg ages (1, 3 or 5 days) showed that G. as...

The aim of genetically comparing different populations of the same species of natural enemies is to identify the strain that is most adapted to the environment where it will be released. In the present study, Inter-Simple Sequence Repeat-Polymerase Chain Reaction (ISSR-PCR) was utilized to estimate the population genetic structure of Gonatocerus ashmeadi (Girault) (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae), the ...
